What is a Trademark?
An introduction to protecting your Intellectual Property
You've spent countless hours growing your business, developing customer relationships and establishing a brand. So why not protect your hard work with a trademark.
What is a Trademark? A trademark can be a word, phrase, letter, number, sound, smell, shape, logo, picture, aspect of packaging or a combination of these . It's used to distinguish your goods and services from your competitors and allows you to use the ® mark.
A registered trademark, gives you the exclusive legal right to use, license and sell it within your country. It prevents unscrupulous operators from using your intellectual property.
How Much Do Trademarks Cost?
You register a trademark by nominating your product or service in a class (a class categorises your trademark). e.g. A pharmaceutical company might protect a drug name by registering it in CLASS 5 (Pharmaceuticals). Global Trademarks
Unfortunately, there is is no such thing as a global trade mark. Most countries have their own Intellectual Property registers.
Service Marks A service mark is the same as a trademark, except that it identifies and distinguishes the source of a service rather than a product. In many countries, a trademark is used to describe both.
