Visual Impact on the Web Balance text and pictures to create a visually powerful website
Effective websites use a combination of textual content and imagery to create a visual feast . Why then are so many sites clearly in famine?
We've either seen their website images on other sites, the pictures are poorly taken (either out of focus or too dark), or they state the obvious.
I recently visited a website that captioned each image to explain that a swimming pool was indeed a swimming pool, and that a golf course was in fact a golf course. I think you get the picture.
We use website images to:
- Attract attention
- Communicate a message
- Create tone
- Provide contrast
- Create visual impact
Spend a little money on stock photography or having your website photgraphs professionally taken. It's worth it. High quality images look good and make your business look good.
Your website images should be:
- Small in file size and load quickly - there's nothing worse than waiting for a poorly optimized image to load. Website images should be no larger than 15-20kb
- Clear and in focus - a blurry or pixellated image looks cheap and relfects negatively on your business
- Appropriate - vague images distract and detract from effective communication
